The Godfather is an Italian American mafia crime film released in 1972. It was directed by Francis Ford Coppola who co-wrote the screenplay with Mario Puzo. The film is supported by Puzo's best-selling 1969 novel of an equivalent name. It marks the first movie of the Godfather trilogy and features Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, and more. The story, spanning from 1945 to 1955, chronicles the Corleone family under patriarch Vito Corleone (Brando), that specializes in the transformation of one of his sons, Michael Corleone (Pacino), from reluctant family outsider to ruthless mafia boss.

Paramount Pictures obtained the rights to the novel before it gained popularity. Studio executives were having trouble finding a good director for the movie; their first few candidates turned down the position before Coppola signed on to direct the film. The studio and Coppola disagreed over the casting for several characters, especially, Vito and Michael. Filming happened on location around New York and in Sicily. The score was composed principally by Nino Rota, with additional pieces by Carmine Coppola.

The Godfather premiered at the Loew's State Theatre on March 14, 1972, and was widely released on March 24, 1972. It was the highest-grossing film of 1972 and was, for a time, the highest-grossing film ever made, earning between $246 and $287 million at the box office. The infamous Italian gangster movie also received excellent responses from audiences and critics, with praise going toward the performances of its cast, the directing, cinematography, screenplay, score, editing, and portrayal of the mafia. The film won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 45th Academy Awards.

Since its release, The Godfather has been considered one among the best and most influential films ever made, especially within the gangster genre. The film is ranked the second-greatest film in American cinema (behind Citizen Kane) by the American Film Institute. It was followed by sequels The Godfather Part II (1974) and the Godfather Part III (1990).
