    Marlon Brando, in full Marlon Brando, Jr. is an American motion picture, stage actor, and director known for his intuitive, ominous characterizations. Brando was the most famous of the method actors, and his slurred, inarticulate delivery marked his rejection of classical dramatic training. His true and fervent performances showed him one of the greatest actors of his generation.

    He won the Oscar for Best Actor twice. He is well-regarded for his social impact on the 20th-century film. Brando was also an activist for numerous causes, strikingly the civil rights movement and different Native American movements.

    Brando established Academy Award nominations for playing Emiliano Zapata in Viva Zapata! (1952); Mark Antony in Joseph L. Mankiewicz's 1953 film version of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar; and Air Force Major Lloyd Gruver in Sayonara (1957), an adaptation of James Michener's 1954 novel.

    The 1960s saw Brando's career take a commercial and perilous decline. He starred and directed in the cult western One-Eyed Jacks, a critical and commercial failure, after which he delivered a series of notable box-office failures, beginning with Mutiny on the Bounty (1962). After ten years of underperforming, he agreed to do a screen test as Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972). He got the part and subsequently won his second Academy Award in a performance critic consider among his greatest. He declined the award due to maltreatment and negative portrayal of Native Americans by Hollywood.

    After a break in the early 1970s, Brando was generally satisfied with being a highly paid character actor in cameo roles, such as in Superman (1978), as Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now (1979), and in The Formula (1980), before he took a nine-year break from film.
