The Godfather Part II is an American epic crime film released in 1974. The film was directed and produced by Francis Coppola and the screenplay was co-written with Puzo. The film stars Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro, Talia Shire, Morgana King, and more. it is the second movie of the Godfather trilogy and is partially based on Puzo's 1969 novel, The Godfather. Interestingly, Godfather II is both sequel and prequel to The Godfather part one.

After the success of the first film, Paramount Pictures began shooting the second installment of the trilogy, with much of the cast and crew returning. Coppola, who was given more control over the film, had wanted to form both a sequel and a prequel to the film to further explore the story of Vito and the fall of Michael.

Principal photography began in October 1973 and finished in June 1974. The Godfather Part II premiered in New York Cityon December 12, 1974, and was released within the United States on December 20, 1974. The gangster sequel received divided reviews from critics but its reputation improved rapidly and it soon became the topic of critical re-evaluation. It went on to gross between 48–88 million dollars worldwide on a 13 million dollar budget. The film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, with Pacino winning the BAFTA Award for Best Actor and being nominated for the Academy Award Best Actor.

The Godfather Part II proved to be a hit sequel, with some fans and critics favoring it over The Godfather. Both Part II and its predecessor remain highly influential films, especially within the gangster genre, and both are considered to be among the best films of all time. In 1997, the American Film Institute ranked it the 32nd greatest film in American film history, and it retained this position 10 years later. The film was selected for preservation within the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1993, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". the ultimate film within the trilogy, The Godfather Part III, was released in 1990.
