  • Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Ernest Lehman vintage movie posters from his critically acclaimed catalog of timeless cinematic contributions.

Ernest Lehman (Dec. 8, 1915 — July 2, 2005) was an American film producer and screenwriter who began as a freelance writer. He made a name for himself with the screenplay for the film Sweet Smell of Success (1957), with co-writer Clifford Odets. The filmmaker also published his writings in magazines such as Colliers, Redbook and Cosmopolitan, which attracted the attention of Hollywood managers.

Lehman found critical acclaim with many films. The screenwriter enjoyed an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and 1960 Edgar Award for Best Motion Screenplay for North by Northwest (1959), directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Cary Grant. He also received Oscar nominations with Sabrina (1954), the musical West Side Story (1961), Hello, Dolly! (1969), starring Barbra Streisand, the mega musical film version of The Sound of Music (1965), Edward Albee's film adaptation play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) and Family Plot (1976) earning his second Edgar Award. He turned down writing offers for Jonathan Demme, yet completed adaptations for the classic Hay Fever and musical version of Zorba, the Greek eventually given to Robert Wise starring actors Anthony Quinn and John Travolta.

In 1977, Ernest Lehman penned the bestselling French Atlantic Affair novel, about unemployed and middle-class Americans who hijack a French cruise ship for a $35 million ransom. It was adapted into a TV miniseries in 1979. The celebrated author also released a novel, Farewell Performance (1982). In 2001, he became the first screenwriter to receive an Honorary Academy Award, as well as recognition from the Writers Guild of America as a major screenwriter in film history. Sadly, Lehman died in 2005 after an apparent heart attack at UCLA Medical Center.
