The Sound of Music is a 1965 American musical and drama film starred by Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Richard Haydn, and Eleanor Parker. It was directed and produced by Robert Wise. The tuneful, and touching film is an adaptation of the stage musical of the same name composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Ernest Lehman wrote the film's screenplay that was adapted from the book written by Lindsay and Crouse. The film is based on Maria von Trapp’s memoirs about the real-life story of the Von Trapp Family singers, one of the world's popular concert groups in the era following World War II.

Julie Andrews plays the role of Maria, an easy-go-lucky postulant from Austria who is hired as a governess in the home of Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a widowed naval officer with seven children. Slowly she wins their hearts as she brings her love for life and music into the home.

For five years after 1966, The Sound of Music became popular throughout the world and was declared the highest-grossing film of all-time.

The Sound of Music garnered five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film also claimed two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Motion Picture and Best Actress.
