George Walton Lucas Jr. is an American filmmaker, producer, screenwriter, and entrepreneur. He was born and raised on a walnut ranch in Modesto, California. After graduating from the University of Southern California in 1967, he tried to join the United States Air Force and military service but was exempted due to diabetes. He planned to become a professional race car driver but a terrible car accident ended that dream permanently.
Lucas was the writer-director of the film American Graffiti (1973) and received five Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. He’s the next epic science fiction film Star Wars (1977) became the highest-grossing film winning six Academy Awards and the sequels. Directed by Steven Spielberg, he created, co-wrote, and produced the Indiana Jones films The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) and a variety of films and television series. In 1969, Lucas married film editor Marcia Lou Griffin who won an Academy Award for editing the original Star Wars film. He received the Academy's Irving G. Thalberg Award in 1991.
In 2012, Lucas sold Lucasfilm to The Walt Disney Company for a sum of $4.05 billion reported that the majority of the proceeds goes to charity. He was awarded in 2013 the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama for his contributions to American cinema. On April 15, 2016, Lucas had donated between $501,000 and $1 million to the Obama Foundation, which is charged with overseeing the Barack Obama Presidential Center.
