Jules and Jim (with the French title Jules et Jim) is a 1962 French New Wave romantic drama film, directed, produced, and written by François Truffaut. Set in World War I, the story tells of a tragic love triangle involving French Bohemian Jim (portrayed by Henri Serre), his shy Austrian friend Jules (portrayed by Oskar Werner), and Jules's girlfriend, and later wife, Catherine (portrayed by Jeanne Moreau). It embodies the type of groundbreaking cinema that originated in Europe during the postwar years through the 1960s.

The film is based on Henri-Pierre Roché's semi-autobiographical narrative, written in 1953, all about the love story of young writer Franz Hessel and Helen Grund, whom Franz Hessel married. François Truffaut came across the book in the mid-1950s while going through some secondhand books at a shop along the Seine in Paris. He later befriended Roché, although Roché was older than him, who had published his first novel at the age of 74. The author approved of the young director's delight to adapt his work into a film.

The film succeeded in winning the 1962 Grand Prix of French film prizes, the Étoile de Cristal, and Jeanne Moreau, who played the lead girl, won that year's prize for Best Actress. Jules and Jim ranked number 46 in Empire magazine's "The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema" in 2010. The soundtrack by Georges Delerue was dubbed as one of the "10 best soundtracks" by Time magazine in its "All Time 100 Movies" list. One song, "Le Tourbillon" ("The Whirlwind") by Serge Rezvani, which was about the turbulence of the lives of the three main characters, became a popular hit.

Truffaut incorporated newsreel footage, photographic stills, freeze frames, panning shots, wipes, masking, dolly shots, and voiceover narration by Michel Subor, which is one of the products of the French New Wave (Nouvelle Vague). The film’s cinematographer was Raoul Coutard who employed the contemporary lightweight cameras to produce an extremely fluid film style. Some of the postwar segments were taken using cameras mounted on bicycles.
