Gone with the Wind is an American romance film in 1939 directed by Victor Fleming, adapted from the 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell, produced by David O. Selznick of Selznick International Pictures.

The film tells the story of Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh), a woman who can deal with a nation at war. Scarlett is beautiful and has vitality. But Ashley (Leslie Howard), the man she has wanted for so long, is going to marry his placid cousin, Melanie (Olivia de Havilland). Their house servant Mammy (Hattie McDaniel), warns Scarlett to behave herself at the party at Twelve Oaks. There is a new man there that day, Rhett Butler (Clark Gable). Scarlett does not know Rhett Butler is in the room when she begs Ashley to choose her instead of Melanie.

Principal photography began January 26, 1939, and ended on July 1, with post-production work continuing until November 11, 1939. Upon its release, consumer magazines and newspapers generally gave Gone With the Wind excellent reviews; however, while its production values, technical achievements, and scale of ambition were universally recognized, some reviewers of the time found the film to be too long and dramatically unconvincing. At the 12th Academy Awards Gone with the Wind set a record for Academy Award wins and nominations.

Film/Art Gallery’s collection of original Gone With the Wind movie posters include a rare Roger Soubie artwork in French for 1955 re-release. The collection also includes Gone With the Wind poster by the iconic Howard Terpning artwork.
