The Long Goodbye is an American neo-noir thriller film released in 1973. The movie is directed by Robert Altman and based on Raymond Chandler's 1953 novel. The screenplay was written by Leigh Brackett, who co-wrote the screenplay for Chandler's large Sleep in 1946. The film stars Elliott Gould as Marlowe and features Sterling Hayden, Nina Van Pallandt, Jim Bouton, Mark Rydell, and an early uncredited appearance by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The story's period was moved from 1949–50 to 1970s Hollywood. In the film, private detective Marlowe drives his friend Terry Lennox to the Mexican border in the middle of the night. When Marlowe returns home, police are expecting him and learns that Terry's wife Sylvia has been killed. He's arrested as an adjunct but released after a couple of days after learning Terry Lennox has seemingly committed suicide in Mexico. Marlowe is visited by mobster, Marty Augustine, who wants to understand what happened to the $350,000 Lennox was set to deliver for him. Meanwhile, Marlowe is hired by Eileen Wade to seek out her husband Roger who often disappears when he wants to dry out. However, she can't find him in any of his usual haunts. It becomes obvious to Marlowe that the Wades, Terry's death, and Augustine are all somehow interconnected.
