    Robert Altman was an American screenwriter, producer, and film director. He is a five time nominee for Best Director at the Academy Awards. Because of his originality in filmmaking, he is consistently ranked as one of the greatest and most influential filmmaker in American cinema.

    Some of his famous directorial films includes M*A*S*H in 1970, written by Ring Lardner Jr., McCabe & Mrs. Miller in 1971, written by Brian McKay and Altman, The Long Goodbye, written by Leigh Brackett, Nashville in 1975, screenplay by Joan Tewkesbury, 3 Women in 1977, also written by Altman, The Player in 1992, written by Martin Tolkin, Short Cuts in 1993, which he co-wrote with Frank Barhydt, and Gosford Park in 2001 screenplay by Julian Fellowes.

    Altman was recognized for his body of work at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with an Academy Honorary Awards in 2006. His movies M*A*S*H, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, and Nashville were choosen for the US National Film Registry. He is one of the three film directors whose films have won the Golden Lion at Venice, the Golden Bear at Berlin, and the Golden Palm at Cannes.

    He won Best Direction at the British Academy Film Awards for his film The Player at 1992;. His film Gosford Park also won Best British Film at the British Academy Film Awards in 2001 and also Best Director at the Golden Globe Awards. His series Tanner '88: The Boiler Room won at the Primetime Emmy Awards for Directing in a Drama series. His film Short Cuts also earned Best Director and Best Screenplay at Independent Spirit Awards in 1993. His movie MASH won Palme d'Or Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1970. His film The Player won Best Director in 1992 at Cannes Film Festival. His movie Short Cuts won Golden Lion, FIPRESCI Prize, Pasinetti Award, Special Volpi Cup in 1993 at Cannes. 

    In 1994, Altman earned Lifetime Achievement Award at the Directors Guild of America Awards.
