Mark Rydell is an American actor, producer, and film director. He directed several films nominated at the Academy Awards, such as The Fox in 1967, The Reivers in 1969, The Cowboys in 1972, Cinderella Liberty in 1973, The Rose in 1979, The River in 1984, and For the Boys in 1991. He was nominated for Best Director for his film On Golden Pond at the Academy Awards in 1981.

He studied acting in New York and began his remarkable roles in television series. He was in The Edge of Night (1956) and in As the World Turns (1958). One of his latest appearance was in a Woody Allen film, Hollywood Ending in 2002.

Rydell directorial feature debut film was The Fox in 1967. It won at the 25th Golden Globe Awards for Best Foreign Film in the English Language. It was also nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay and Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for Anne Heywood. Lalo Schifrin was also nominated for Best Original Music Score at the Academy Awards and Best Original Score from a Motion Picture or Television Show at Grammy Awards. The film was also acknowledged by American Film Institute and nominated at the AFI's 100 Years... 100 Passions in 2002.

He produced The Reivers in 1969 which earned him Oscar nominations in 1970 for Actor in a Supporting Role and Original Music Score. Then he directed the The Cowboys in 1972. He also produced Cinderella Liberty, a romantic comedy in 1973. He also created the film Harry and Walter Go to New York which was a box office flop. Then he directed the movie The Rose in 1979, a box office hit.
