Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Melvin Van Peebles vintage movie posters from his critically acclaimed catalog of timeless cinematic performances and creations.

Melvin Van Peebles was born on August 21th, 1932. He is an American actor, filmmaker, playwright, novelist, and composer most famous for creating the film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, which brought about a new era of black-focused films. He is the father of director and actor Mario Van Peebles.

In 1957 the filmmaker shot his first short film, Pickup Men for Herrick, and made two more short films during the same period. In 1968, Van Peebles published four novels and a collection of articles from Hara-kiri in French. He made his first feature-length film, The Story of a Three-Day Pass (La Permission), which is based on his fourth novel by the same title. Melvin Van Peebles' first Hollywood film was Watermelon Man, the 1970 Columbia Pictures comedy, written by Herman Raucher. The movie tells the story of a casually racist white man who suddenly wakes up black and finds himself detached from his friends, family, and job.

In 1970, Melvin Van Peebles also directed a film of the Powder Ridge Rock Festival, which was banned by court command. In 2017, he was also featured in a short film, Methane Momma, directed by Alain Rimbert, and his narration of poetic work with the support of music by The Heliocentrics. In 2019, Van Peebles appeared at the presentation of Burnt Sugar, presented the film Sweetback in Brooklyn while playing their own interpretation of the soundtrack.
