Robert Stone was born in England to a noted historian father, Lawrence Stone, who was a professor of English history at Princeton and Oxford. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1976. He went to study at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, did a short stint at Sorbonne University in Paris, and at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York City. His debut work Radio Bikini in 1988 was nominated for the Academy Award. Radio Bikini is set in 1946 about a nuclear test performed about Bikini Atoll. Stone multi-tasked as a director, producer, writer, cameraman, and editor.
Over the last 30 years, the filmmaker developed an international reputation with a range of unique and critically praised feature-documentaries about American history, pop-culture, the mass media, and the environment. Robert Stone's films received a nomination for Best Feature Documentary in the Academy Award and two PrimeTime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Achievement in Non-Fiction Filmmaking. Seven of Stone's movies have been shown on the acclaimed PBS history series American Experience and four of his films have premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The film director continues to turn out personally created high-end documentaries from his home in New York’s Hudson Valley. Stone’s film catalog includes the aforementioned Radio Bikini (1988), World War Three (1998), Hollywood Vietnam (2005), The Civilian Conservation Corps (2009), Chasing the Moon (2019), and many more.
