Scarface, an American crime drama film directed by Brian De Palma, was released in 1983. The story was written by Oliver Stone, produced by Martin Bregman, and distributed under Universal Pictures label. It was an official remake of a 1931 film that tells the story of a Cuban refugee. The cast also features Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Robert Loggia as some of the important characters.

After watching the 1931 version film, Pacino became interested in it and decided to remake the movie with producer Martin Bregman. Per their decision, Sidney Lumet was initially hired as the director of their film but then he was replaced by De Palma who hired Oliver Stone to write down the script. Filming started in November 1982 and came to an end in May 1983. The film was shot mostly in the Los Angeles area; Giorgio Moroder composed the soundtrack. 

The film earned 45 million dollars at the domestic box office and $66 million worldwide. Initial critical reception was very negative because of its excessive violence, profanity, and graphic drug usage. Some Cuban complained that this film portrayed the Cubans as criminals and drug traffickers. But later on, critics have reappraised it, and it's now considered to be one among the simplest films within the crime genre, and also it is one of the greatest remakes ever made. Screenwriters and directors like Scorsese have also praised the film, and it's been referenced extensively in popular culture. Although over the years, the film has been considered a cult film.
