Sydney Irwin Pollack, born on July 1st, 1934, is an American film director, producer, and actor. He acted in over 30 movies and television shows, produced over 44 films, and directed more than 20 films and ten television shows.
In 1961, Pollack played a director in The Twilight Zone episode "The Trouble with Templeton". But he found his real success in television in the 1960s by directing episodes of series, such as the Alfred Hitchcock Hour and the Fugitive. He then started film production with a string of movies after doing TV that drew public attention. Sydney Pollack's film-directing debut was The Slender Thread in 1965. Over time, the filmmaker won 11 Oscars and received a total of 48 Academy Award nominations.
Sydney Pollack's film Out of Africa won him Academy Awards for directing and producing and in 1969, and he was also nominated for Best Director at the Oscars for They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and Tootsie in 1982.
Some of the Hollywood director's other best-known works include Jeremiah Johnson in 1972, The Way We Were in 1973, Three Days of the Condor in 1975, and Absence of Malice in 1981. His subsequent films included Havana in 1990, The Firm in 1993, The Interpreter in 2005, and in 2007 he acted in Michael Clayton. Pollack is probably best known to television viewers for his recurring role playing Will Truman's father on the NBC sitcom Will & Grace from 2000 to 2006.
