My Neighbor Totoro (1988) is a Japanese fantasy film animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film stars actors Noriko Hidaka, Chika Sakamoto, and Hitoshi Takagi, and it tells the story of a professor's two young daughters, Satsuki and Mei, their mother, Yasuko, and their friendly wood spirits interactions. The house is inhabited by susuwatari, only seen when moving from light to dark places. The idea is that the girls must become comfortable in their new house so that the spirits will leave.

The film displays animism, according to Eriko Ogihara-Schuck. Totoro has animistic traits and has kami status, referred to as "mori no nushi," or master of the forest, which is popular and a common practice in the Shinto tradition, following an encounter with a kami. Moreover, the film creates a strangely universe of supernatural creatures coexisting with modernity. Oga's style and work became a trademark on My Neighbor Totoro which led to his continued partnership with Studio Ghibli. Streamline Pictures exclusively dubbed and produced My Neighbor Totoro in the year 1989 and Troma Films had distributed the dub of the film co-produced by Jerry Beck.

My Neighbor Totoro won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize, Kinema Junpo for Best Film, Mainichi Film Award, and Special Award at the Blue Ribbon Awards in the same year. The film has received international releases since 2002, and it hit a total box office gross receipt in Japan up to ¥1.17 billion in 2005.
