    American writer Garson Kanin (November 24, 1912 – March 13, 1999) was also a famous director who made his Broadway debut in Little Ol' Boy (1933) and Hitch Your Wagon in 1936. His first film was A Man to Remember (1938), considered by New York Times one of the ten best films of the Year. His famous crafts include The Great Man Votes (1939), My Favorite Wife (1940), They Knew What They Wanted (1940) and Tom, Dick and Harry (1941). He also directed Spencer Tracy's first play in 1945 and Broadway The Rugged Path by Robert Sherwood.

    After the war, he directed Born Yesterday (1946), and collaborated with his wife Ruth Gordon on Adam's Rib (1949), Pat and Mike (1952), and A Gift of Time (1962) with Henry Fonda. They stopped for the sake of their marriage, but after 1952 they co-wrote one more TV film Hardhat and Legs (1980). His other works includes The Diary of Anne Frank (1955), Blow Up a Storm (1959), his musical Funny Girl (1964) starring Barbra Streisand and Cast of Characters (1969) which is a collection of short stories; and nonfiction such as Tracy and Hepburn: An Intimate Memoir (1971).

    Kanin also worked A Thousand Summers (1973), Moviola (1979) best-selling novel Smash (1980) and Together Again! The Stories of the Great Hollywood Teams (1981) with his noted screenwriter brother Michael Kanin. His last play Peccadillo (1985) made him inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame until his death in 1999 due to heart failure.
