American blockbuster franchise action hero Indiana Jones is based on the adventures of Dr. Henry Walton, created by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg under Lucasfilm (now The Walt Disney Company) in 1981. The series began with the original film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, starring Harrison Ford. Its sequel was released in 1984 The Temple of Doom with singer and actress Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw) and sidekick Short Round (Jonathan Ke Quan).

In 1989, its sequel The Last Crusade starring Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott), Walter Donovan (Julian Glover) , Dr. Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody) and Indiana's estranged father Henry (Sean Connery) was released. The plot revolves around a hunt to find the Holy Grail. In 1992, the globe-trotting action hero franchise expanded to television with the series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Marvel Comics also began publishing The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones in 1983. 

George Lucas sold Indiana Jones to Walt Disney Studios in 2012, so Disney currently owns all the rights to future Indiana Jones films as of 2013. In 2008, the fourth film starring Harrison Ford as the adventure icon was released. The film, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, follows Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett) searching for a crystal skull on a journey across the Amazon rainforest. The film also features characters Mac (Ray Winstone), Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf) and Marion Ravenwood. Spielberg stepped down as director in February 2020. An untitled fifth film is scheduled to be released in 2022 with James Mangold directing and writing the script along with Jez and John-Henry Butterworth. Frank Marshall assured that the film will be a sequel and Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that the film will not be the conclusion of the franchise.
