William Beaudine was an American director and film actor. He was one of Hollywood’s most inventive directors, turning out films in exceptional numbers and in a wide variety of genres.

William Washington Beaudine was born in New York City on January 15th, 1892. In 1909, he began his career as an actor with American Mutoscope and Biograph Company. He was hired as an actor and director in 1915 by the Kalem Company. He was the assistant to director D. W. Griffith on The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance. When he was 23, Beaudine directed his first film, a short called Almost a King in 1915. He continued to make short films until 1922, when he shifted his efforts into directing feature-length films.

He directed silent films for Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, First National Pictures, Principal, and Warner Brothers. He made Sparrow in 1926, a story of orphans imprisoned in a swamp farm starring Mary Pickford. Before the sound era began, William Beaudine already had at least 30 pictures to his credit. Among the first sound films were short comedies by Mack Sennett. He made at least one film for Sennett while contractually bound somewhere else, resulting in adopting the pseudonym “William Crowley” or “William X. Crowley”. He would occasionally use the names in the later years.

William Beaudine's last two feature films were the horror-westerns Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter and Billy the Kid vs. Dracula, both released in 1966. By the end of the decade, he was the industry’s oldest working professional. The Academy Film Archive conserved three films directed by William Beaudine: Little Annie Rooney, Mom and Dad, and A Husband in Haste. He died of uremic poisoning in California in 1970.
