  • Matthew Barney movie posters document the Cremaster Cycle — a sculptor, filmmaker, and performance artist whose extended art film series stands as one of the most significant extended film projects produced outside the commercial cinema tradition in the past half-century.

The Cremaster cycle — five films produced between 1994 and 2002 in non-sequential order — constitutes a single, internally consistent mythology exploring themes of sexual differentiation, biological process, and American history through a visual vocabulary of extraordinary opulence and formal invention. Shot in locations including the Chrysler Building, the Isle of Man during the TT motorcycle race, and the Salt Lake desert, with production costs unprecedented for gallery-distributed work, the films were exhibited in museums and art galleries rather than cinemas.

The promotional and exhibition materials for the Cremaster cycle — printed for gallery exhibitions, film festival screenings, and museum presentations — reflect the films' own aesthetic: highly produced, visually complex, and entirely outside the conventions of commercial film advertising. Their rarity is intrinsic to their production context. Barney's subsequent work includes Drawing Restraint 9 (2005) and the River of Fundament (2014).

Find original exhibition and promotional prints from his film projects — rare survivals from a museum and gallery circuit entirely outside commercial cinema distribution.
