  • Exodus

Silkscreen poster for Otto Preminger's 1960 historical drama. First and only printing, circa 1985. For more information about Silkscreens click here

Dubbed a "Jewish Western", Exodus is set in the period immediately before the 1949 partition of Palestine and the creation of the state of Israel. Bass' first priority was to convey that the film was not a biblical epic, as is suggested by the title. Like the director and producer Otto Preminger, Bass saw the film as representing the struggle of the Jewish people to establish a homeland. Thus, he created a symbol wherein silhouetted hands reaching up to the sky suggest the spiritual side of the cause, while the gun held aloft in a closed fist makes it clear that the film is about a contemporary struggle.
