Bass' first priority was to convey that the film was not a biblical epic, as is suggested by the title. Like the director and producer Otto Preminger, Bass saw the film as representing the struggle of the Jewish people to establish a homeland. Thus, he created a symbol wherein silhouetted hands reaching up to the sky suggest the spiritual side of the cause, while the gun held aloft in a closed fist makes it clear that the film is about a contemporary struggle.
