    Boys Clubs of America

This vintage Saul Bass poster is for Boys Clubs of America.

After the success of Saul Bass' designs for the Girl Scouts of America, he was approached by the Boys Clubs of America. At the time Bass was brought on board, the Boys Clubs were opening up to girls (somewhat reluctantly in certain places), and therefore needed a logo that was not gender-specific. The mission of the Boys Clubs of America, founded in 1860, was "to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens."

Saul Bass described the new symbol as, "visualizing the primary commitment of Boys Clubs of America: connection," implying not only the guiding or helping hand of an adult, but also the hands of club members clasped in solidarity and connected across race, age and eventually also gender.

The name was changed to Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 1990.
