You Only Live Twice was released after Thunderball, and is the fifth movie to star Sean Connery as MI6 agent James Bond. The film's screenplay was written by Roald Dahl, and lightly supported by Ian Fleming's 1964 novel. While both Dr. No and Goldfinger had taken liberties with their respective source material, You Only Live Twice is the first Bond film to deviate substantially from the book, although it retained many of the characters and the Japanese setting of the first.

Directed by Lewis Gilbert, You Only Live Twice marks the first entry in the 007 Bond franchise to be helmed by the acclaimed filmmaker. Later, he directed the 1977 film The Spy Who Loved Me and then the 1979 film Moonraker, both of which starred Roger Moore. 

During the filming in Japan, it had been announced that Sean Connery would retire from the infamous spy role, but he returned in 1971s Diamonds Are Forever and later in 1983 Bond film Never Say Never More. You Only Live Twice was an excellent success, receiving positive reviews and grossing over $111 million at the worldwide box office.
