American action-drama film Top Gun (1986) was directed by director Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer in association with Paramount Pictures. The screenplay was inspired by an article titled ""Top Guns"" published in California magazine, which was written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. Top Gun features iconic character Lieutenant Pete ""Maverick"" Mitchell played by Tom Cruise. Maverick is a young naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise., Kelly McGillis stars as Charlotte ""Charlie"" Blackwood, Maverick's love interest, who is based on a real-life person, Christine Fox. Val Kilmer stars as LT Tom ""Iceman"" Kazansky, Anthony Edwards plays Maverick's best friend, and Tom Skerritt plays the commanding officer and instructor of Top Gun.

The film received review praises by film critics, particularly in regard to the stunt action sequences executed by future NASA astronaut Scott Altman, who piloted the F-14 aircraft for the effects and aerial stunts. The stunts highlighted the astounding performances of Cruise and McGillis, which turned Top Gun into a commercial hit that grossed $356 million dollars. The Tom Cruise action blockbuster has maintained its popularity over the years and earned an IMAX 3D re-release in 2013. Top Gun freceived the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Take My Breath Away, as performed by Berlin reaching 9× Platinum certification and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart. The film was preserved by United States Library of Congress in the National Film Registry in the year 2015. A sequel titled Top Gun: Maverick was originally scheduled for release in 2020, but was postponed to July 2, 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
