Science fiction and action film The Matrix (1999) is written and directed by the Wachowskis (trans women sisters Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski) and produced by Joel Silver. The film stars Keanu Reeves as the hacker Neo, Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus, Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith, and Joe Pantoliano. The film is the first installment in the Matrix franchise, which depicts a dystopian future where humanity is unknowingly trapped inside a simulated reality. The Matrix features intelligent machines which distract humans while using their bodies as an energy source, and computer programmer Thomas Anderson aka Neo is where is drawn into a rebellion against the machines.

The Matrix film is an example of the science cyberpunk subgenre and was influenced by Japanese animation and martial arts films as exbhibited in the Wachowskis' approach to action scenes. The film uses the Hongkong action cinema wire fu techniques and popularized a visual effect known as the "bullet time" which detaches the time and space of a camera from that of its visible subject, allowing the action within a shot to progress in slow-motion - while the camera is in sped-up movements. This style was mostly praised by critics, but some that it overshadowed the film's action scenes.

The Matrix grossed over $460 million worldwide and won four Academy Awards (Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Sound and Best Sound Editing), along with BAFTA and Saturn Awards. The film's success led to two feature film sequels being released in 2003 titled The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, which were alos produced by Joel Silver.
