American epic space opera film Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017) is written and directed by Rian Johnson, and produced by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman under Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film is the eighth episode of the nine-part Skywalker saga and second installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy following The Force Awakens in 2015. The film's cast includes Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher (her last film performance before her passing in December 2016), Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong'o, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, Benicio del Toro and the return of Frank Oz as Yoda, who appears as a Force spirit.

The sequel film is part of a new trilogy which follows Rey seeking the aid of Luke Skywalker for the Resistance in the fight against Kylo Ren.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi became the highest-grossing film of 2017 and had a worldwide opening of $450.8 million receiving positive reviews and four nominations at the 90th Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects and Best Original Score as well as two nominations at the 71st British Academy Film Awards.
