Terminator is an American media franchise made by James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd. The original film, The Terminator in 1984, introduced audiences to the iconic titular cyborg character portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie was a box office hit and followed by the blockbuster sequel Terminator 2: Judgement Day in 1991. The film is regarded as a highly successful sequel that rivals the first entry; Linda Hamilton also established herself as a female action hero in the second film. Sequels Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines in 2003, Terminator Salvation in 2009, Terminator Genisys in 2015, and Terminator: Dark Fate - which reunited Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton - in 2019 followed.

The franchise spans over the series of science fiction action films, novels, comics, and additional media about a total war between Skynet artificial intelligence - a self-aware military machine network - and John Connor's Resistance forces, battling over the future survival of the human race.

The first film, The Terminator was released in 1984 by Orion Pictures. It was co-written, produced and directed by James Cameron. The film features Arnold Schwarzenegger as T-800, Linda Hamilton as heroine Sarah Connor, and Michael Biehn. It was a huge success and grossed $78.4 million worldwide.

The second film, Terminator 2: Judgement Day also featured Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, along with Edward Furlong as John Connor, Robert Patrick as T-1000, and Joe Morton. Once again, James Cameron co-wrote, directed and produced the film. It won various Academy Awards and grossed $523.7 million worldwide.

The third entry, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machine was released by Warner Bros. Pictures and Columbia TriStar Film Distributors internationally in 2003. It was directed by Jonathan Mostow from a screenplay by John Brancato and Michael Ferris. The action blockbuster sequel received successful reviews and grossed $433.4 million worldwide.

The fourth movie in the Terminator series, Terminator Salvation, was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and Columbia Pictures hailing from The Halcyon Company, in 2009. The movie was directed by McG from a screenplay by John Brancato and Michael Ferris. It stars Christian Bale as John Connor, the leader of the resistance. It received mixed reviews and earned $371.4 million.

The fifth entry, Terminator Genisys from 2015 was a reset of the franchise with exception of Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising the role of the iconic Terminator. The film was based on a screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier, and was directed by Alan Taylor. Terminator Genisys grossed $440.6 million worldwide.

Terminator: Dark Fate was released 2019. The blockbuster sequel was produced by Tim Miller, with a screenplay by David Goyer, Justin Rhodes, and Billy Ray. The film is a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day and was planned to be the first part of a new Terminator trilogy mapped out by James Cameron. However, the film was not a success as intended.
