American film director, actor, screenwriter, and producer Ray Dennis Steckler was born on January 25, 1938 in Reading, Pennsylvania, where his grandmother, who largely raised him, was responsible for developing his love of movies. At age 15, Steckler received a gift: an 8mm home movie camera from his stepfather, and Steckler starts making amateur pirate film with friends. 

He served years in the United States Army from 1956 to 1959 and was discharged as a Sergeant. He also served in Korea and spent a year as an Army Photographer and spent a year at the Kaufman Astoria Studios in Astoria, Queens with the Army Pictorial Service. Steckler was a props man before becoming secondary cameraman on the film The World's Greatest Sinner, directed by and starring Timothy Carey. When the primary director of photography was fired, Steckler replaced him.

Steckler continues to work in cinematography in the Los Angeles area. He attained a union card and was recognized at major studios, including Universal Studios. When he was supposedly fired for nearly knocking an A-frame onto Alfred Hitchcock, Steckler turned to the B-movie circuit. Working side-by-side with Arch Hall Sr.'s Fairway Pictures, Steckler started as cinematographer and now-and-then actor in the vehicles for Hall's son Arch Hall, Jr. Steckler made his debut film in the Hall vehicle Wild Guitar. Hall Sr. was concerned if his movie films would play when the original choice of the heavy was black, Steckler told his friend he had to go and took the role under his onscreen name, Cash Flagg.
