American space-opera Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) is fantasy space epic film written and directed by George Lucas and produced by Lucasfilm. It was distributed by 20th Century Fox and stars Liam Neeson as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Natalie Portman as Queen Padmé Amidala. Portman's performances in Léon: The Professional (1994) and Beautiful Girls (1996) impressed Lucas. The sci fi space saga also stars Ahmed Best, Ian McDiarmid, Anthony Daniels as the voice of C-3PO, Kenny Baker as R2-D2, Pernilla August as Shmi Skywalker and Frank Oz as the voice of Yoda.

The film was set 32 years during the Galactic Republic era and follows Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi as they try to protect Queen Padmé Amidala of Naboo in hopes of maintaining the peace of the entire planet. Along the journey, the Jedi meet the “Chosen One” Anakin Skywalker, played by Jake Lloyd. The film was praised particularly for Neeson and McGregor’s performance and became the highest-grossing film of 1999. This entry in the Skywalker familly saga is considered the first installment in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, as well as the entire franchise.

The Phantom Menace illustrates several themes demonstrated along the way in pre production concept drawings by Ralph McQuarrie, as well as interior and creature designs created using new 3-D animated storyboards.

The filming took place at Leavesden Film Studios in England, with many stunts coordinated by Roger Christian's second unit. Production on Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace then moved to the Tunisian desert and the Italian Caserta Palace. The film received three Academy Award nominations and won Saturn Awards for Best Costumes and Best Special Effects.
