Spirited Away was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film was released in 2001 and tells the story of Chihiro Ogino, a 10-year-old girl who, upon moving, enters the planet of Kami (spirits) of Japanese Shinto folklore. After her parents become pigs at the hand of witch Yubaba, Chihiro takes employment working in Yubaba's bathhouse to seek a way to free herself and her parents, and return to the human world.

After its release, it became the most successful film in Japanese history, grossing over $352 million worldwide. The film overtook Titanic (the top-grossing film worldwide at the time) at the Japanese box office to become the highest-grossing film in Japanese history with a complete of ¥30.8 billion. Spirited Away received universal acclaim and is usually ranked among the best animated films ever made.
