    American film director, producer, author, and screenwriter Melville Shavelson (April 1, 1917 – August 8, 2007) was the writer on Bob Hope's radio show, The Pepsodent Show, until 1938. He wrote the screenplays The Princess and the Pirate (1944), Where There's Life (1947), The Great Lover (1949), and Sorrowful Jones (1949) in Hollywood. He was nominated twice for an Academy Award with Jack Rose for Best Original Screenplay for The Seven Little Foys (1955) and Houseboat (1958).

    Shavelson directed the films Beau James (1957), by Gene Fowler and starring Bob Hope as Jimmy Walker, The Five Pennies (1959), where he won a Screen Writers Guild Award, It Started in Naples (1960), produced by Jack Rose, screenplay by Suso Cecchi d'Amico and story by Michael Pertwee and Jack Davies, On the Double (1961), The Pigeon That Took (1962), A New Kind of Love (1963), starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Cast a Giant Shadow (1966), and Yours, Mine and Ours (1968). He created the ABC screenplay 1979 Ike, based on the World War II exploits of General Dwight Eisenhower with Robert Duvall and Lee Remick. His autobiography was published in 2007, entitled How to Succeed in Hollywood Without Really Trying-- P.S. You Can't!, including other books, such as (with Bob Hope) Don’t Shoot, It’s Only Me: Bob Hope’s Comedy History of the United States, How to Make a Jewish Movie (1971), and Lualda in 1973

    Shavelson had two children with his first wife Lucille who died in 2000. He married Ruth Florea until his death in 2007 of natural causes at 90 years old.
