    American film director, producer and screenwriter Joel T. Schumacher (August 29, 1939 – June 22, 2020) became a fashion designer and moved on to film-making with movies like The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981), written by Jane Wagner starring Lily Tomlin, Charles Grodin and Ned Beatty and D.C. Cab with a story by Topper Carew starring Max Gail, Adam Baldwin and Gary Busey.

    Schumacher gained recognition for his film St. Elmo's Fire (1985), with cast members Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe and Demi Moore. His other notable early films inlcude the teen vampire thriller The Lost Boys, and courtroom drama thriller The Client (1994), which was based on the 1993 novel by John Grisham. He replaced Tim Burton as director of the Batman franchise with the superhero DC Comics summer blockbuster Batman Forever starring Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carey, Nicole Kidman and Chris O'Donnell. He continued on with smaller-budgeted films Tigerland and Phone Booth starring Colin Farrell. He later directed The Phantom of the Opera in 2004, a musical drama film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical starring Gerard Butler in the title role, along with Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson and Miranda Richardson. His final directorial work was for the political thriller entitled House of Cards, an American streaming television series by Beau Willimon which was an adaptation of the 1990 BBC series of the same name and based on 1989 novel by Michael Dobbs. It became the first TV series to have been produced by a studio for Netflix and starred Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey.

    Schumacher claimed to have been abused at a young age and later revealed himself to have had sex with thousands of men. He passed away in June 2020 from cancer and received praises from Jim Carrey and Matthew McConaughey, as Schumacher was responsible for launching their careers.
