American director, screenwriter and film critic Paul Joseph Schrader was born on July 22, 1946 gained recognition for the film Blue Collar, which features his brother Leonard as the co-writer, as well as for The Yakuza (1974) directed by Sydney Pollack. He wrote the script for Obsession for Brian De Palma (1975) followed by Rolling Thunder (1977). Schrader's script for Taxi Driver (1976) won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Director Martin Scorsese brough life to scripts by Paul Schrader with Raging Bull (1980), featuring Mardik Martin, American Gigolo starring Richard Gere (1980), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and Bringing Out the Dead in 1999.
Paul Schrader's other famous films include crime drama Hardcore, the 1982 remake of Cat People, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) which was inspired by Japanese writer Yukio Mishima, the life of Hearst Corporation heiress Patty Hearst (1988), Light Sleeper (1992), the drama Affliction and Touch both in 1997, the adapation of Elmore Leonard’s novel, Auto Focus (2002), The Canyons (2013), and First Reformed (2017). Along the way, he earned his first Academy Award nomination. He published his book on Transcendental Style in Film: Ozu, Bresson, Dreyer in 1972. The filmmaker later directed Auto Focus, which was based on the life and murder of Bob Crane in 2002. He filmed The Walker (2007), Adam Resurrected (2008), Canyons (2013), The Dying of the Light (2014) starring Nicolas Cage, Anton Yelchin and Irène Jacob and First Reformed (2017),starring Ethan Hawke. Paul Schrader was married to Jeannine Oppewall, which ended in divorce, and to Mary Beth Hurt in 1983. They have two children.
