    Czech film director Jan Schmidt (January 3, 1934 – September 27, 2019) was a filmmaker whose films became popular between 1960 and 1995. Specifically, his 1969 Czech-Soviet action-thriller film The Lanfier Colony, with cast members Juozas Budraitis, Zuzana Kocúriková and Václav Neckář, was entered into the 6th Moscow International Film Festival. He collaborated with director Pavel Juráček for the drama film Joseph Kilian (1963) which was released in 1964. He also directed Late August at the Hotel Ozone (1967), a science fiction film with a screenplay by Juráček. The crime film Koncert (1981), about the two criminals named Daman and Kejchald who managed to escape from jail, was written by Václav Dusek and Schmidt himself. It stars Petra Janu, Ivan Pokorný and Jaroslav Tomsa.

    Czech filmmaker Jan Schmidt has other masterpieces including The Bride with the Most Beautiful Eyes (1976), Settlement of Crows (1978), The Death of a Talented Cobbler (1983), Lenin, Lord and Mother (1990). The drama Luk královny Dorotky (1971), features a group characters that gather for a grotesque gloomy funeral and stars Jana Brejchová, Andrea Cunderlíková, and Ladislav Chudík. Schmidt was the second unit director of the controversial biography Amadeus (1984), about the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as told by the composer Antonio Salieri, who was jealous and claimed to have murdered him. It was directed by Milos Forman and written by Peter Shaffer starring F. Murray Abraham, Tom Hulce and Elizabeth Berridge. Schmidt died in 2019 due to a long illness in the Czech Republic.
