German renowned filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff was born on March 31, 1939 and is a member of the New German Cinema of the early 1970s. Other filmmakers in this group include Werner Herzog, filmmaker Wim Wenders and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. His friendship with Bertrand Tavernier and Louis Malle led him to his first job in the Metro (1960), and the German filmmaker went on to A Very Private Affair (1962), The Fire Within (1963) and Viva Maria! (1965). From there, he went on to A Degree of Murder (1967), Man on Horseback (1969), Baal (1970), The Sudden Wealth of the Poor People of Kombach (1971), The Morals of Ruth Halbfass (1972) and A Free Woman in 1972.
Volker Schlöndorff completed the TV movie Stayover in Tirol (1974) and later directed his first opera, Leoš Janáček's Káťa Kabanová. He then adapted Georgina's Reasons (1975). The German filmmaker's first hit film was with The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum (1975) by Heinrich Böll starring Angela Winkler. His second opera was We Come to the River in 1976, after he which he returned to filmmaking with The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum and Coup de Grâce (1976), anthology Germany in Autumn (1978) and later worked with Alexander Kluge, Stefan Aust and Alexander von Eschwege on The Candidate in 1980.
Schlöndorff's first English-language film was Swann in Love (1984), and he went on to make The Handmaid's Tale (1990), Voyager (1991),The Ogre (1996) based on a novel by Michel Tournier starring John Malkovich, The Legend of Rita (2000) and Strike (2006). Volker Schlöndorff married Margarethe von Trotta, which was followed by Angelika Schlöndorff.
