Austrian-born Swiss film and stage actor, writer, director, and producer Maximilian Schell (December 8, 1930 – February 1, 2014) was an Academy Award winning Best Actor for the 1961 courtroom drama film Judgment at Nuremberg, directed and produced by Stanley Kramer. He appeared in numerous German films since he could speak both English and German before moving on to Hollywood. His two major films are The Man in the Glass Booth (1975), playing a character with two identities, and Julia (1977), for which he received Oscar nominations as best actor and best supporting actor, respectively.
Schell portrayed diverse personalities as leader Simón Bolívar, Russian emperor Peter the Great and Albert Einstein. He played the role as Vladimir Lenin in the television film Stalin (1992), which also starred Robert Duvall, and won the Golden Globe Award as Best Actor for portraying Stalin -- and cinematography awards for Vilmos Zsigmond. Schell acted in plays and earned the title as one of the greatest Hamlets ever. He was an accomplished pianist and conductor, performing with Claudio Abbado and Leonard Bernstein with his elder sister Maria Schell, whom he produced the documentary My Sister Maria in 2002. He appeared in the film Alles Glück dieser Erde (2003), The Return of the Dancing Master (2004), and, most recently, in Robert Altman's production of Arthur Miller's play "Resurrection Blues" in 2006.
Schell died in Austria at the age of 83 in 2014 from a sudden and serious illness which was reported by Tagesschau for a treatment of pneumonia.
