French film director and screenwriter Claude Sautet (February 23, 1924 – July 22, 2000) was the director of French comedy film Hello Smile! Hello Smile! (1956), written by Jean Marsan with stars Henri Salvador and Louis de Funès. He was recognized internationally with The Things of Life (1970), based on the 1967 novel Les Choses de la vie by Paul Guimard, featuring Michel Piccoli which revived the career of Romy Schneider, Max and the Junkmen (1971), and César and Rosalie (1972) with Yves Montand.
His acclaimed films Vincent, François, Paul and the Others (1974), featuring Piccoli, Montand, Gérard Depardieu, and Stéphane Audran, critiqued by Peter Bradshaw “as the best"" which followed further success with French drama Mado (1976).
His drama film A Simple Story (1978) was nominated for the Academy as Best Foreign Language Film with Romy Schneider as Marie which won the 1979 César Award for Best Actress. He later made two films: Waiter! Waiter! (1983) starring Yves Montand, Nicole Garcia, Jacques Villeret and Marie Dubois which received 4 César nominations, for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor (twice) and Best Sound for Garçon! (1983), and the comedy film A Few Days with Me (1988). He won the Silver Lion and the César Award for Best Director for A Heart in Winter (1992) and once more for Nelly and Mr. Arnaud (1995), both starred by Emmanuelle Béart.
In 2000, Claude Sautet died of liver cancer in Paris. He was married to Graziella Sautet and had one child.
