American film director and actor Joseph Sargent (July 22, 1925 – December 22, 2014) was born as Giuseppe Daniele Sorgente, popular for the movie White Lightning (1973), starring Burt Reynolds and Jennifer Billingsley. He was popularly known for the mini-series Manions of America, which featured Pierce Brosnan, Jaws: The Revenge (1987), The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974), and Nightmares (1983). Other films include the Gregory Peck biopic MacArthur (1977) in an eponymous role as American General of the Army Douglas MacArthur and the horror anthology Nightmares (1983) starring Emilio Estevez, Lance Henriksen, Cristina Raines, and Veronica Cartwright.

His most popular feature film was the subway thriller The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, a 1974 American thriller film produced by Gabriel Katzka and Edgar J. Scherick. He won four Emmy Awards over his career.

He worked for The Karen Carpenter Story, The Long Island Incident, Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, and the 2007 remake of Sally Field docudrama Sybil. He was nominated for eight DGA awards for television movies, and in 2005 won the DGA Outstanding Directorial Achievement award. He spent time as the Senior Filmmaker-in-Residence at the American Film Institute Conservatory in Los Angeles.

He was married first to Mary Carver, divorced and had two children. His daughter, actress Lia Sargent, has done ADR directing and script writing for the production company Animaze. His second wife Carolyn Nelson helped him for Deaf Theatre West until Sargent died on December 2014 in Malibu, California at the age of 89, due to complications from heart disease.
