    American novelist, fiction writer, and screenwriter James Arnold Horowitz (June 10, 1925 – June 19, 2015) was a pilot by profession in the Air Force, until his first successful novel publication of The Hunters in 1957 recieved a film adaptation starring Robert Mitchum, gathering acclaims for its powerful performances and realistic portrayal of the Korean War.

    He legally changed his name to Salter and published his second novel The Arm of Flesh (1961), later A Sport and a Pastime (1967), set in post-war France. He worked as a screenwriter for Three (1969) and Robert Redford’s vehicle Downhill Racer (1969), followed by novels Light Years (1975) and Solo Faces (1979) which made him won numerous literary awards.

    Salter was married to Ann, whom he divorced in 1975 and had four children. He married again in 1998, to Kay Eldredge and had a son, Theo Salter. In 2006, the couple co-authored a book, Life Is Meals: A Food Lover's Book of Days, where James claimed that he was most influenced by André Gide and Thomas Wolfe. In his 1997 memoir, Burning the Days, he uses prose style and published a short story Dusk which received the PEN/Faulkner Award, especially “Twenty Minutes”, the basis for the 1996 film Boys. In 2012, he was selected for the 25th PEN Malamud Award. His final novel, All That Is, was published in 2013 and became the first Kapnick Writer-in-Residence at the University of Virginia the following year. He died on June, 2015 in Sag Harbor, New York.
