  • Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Saint Joan vintage movie posters. Film/Art Gallery offers a wide range of movie posters and artwork for cinema's ultimate drama romantic films.

The 1957 historical drama film Saint Joan is adapted from the George Bernard Shaw play about the life of Joan of Arc. The film had a restructured screenplay by Graham Greene and was the film debut of actress Jean Seberg, getting the role by winning a talent search by Preminger.

Played by Richard Widmark as Charles VII, commander of the army Joan of Arc (Jean Seberg) heard the voices of Saints Catherine and Margaret telling she would lead the French army against the English. Joan challenges Charles to retake Paris from the English, because of this she is captured and handed to the English. She then signs a document of recantation, is excommunicated, and dragged to the square to be burned.

Several reviews of the film came out including two in The Times that Greene's condensation of the play resulted in some odd omissions and additions in the first half of the film. And that the film lacks any historical introduction. However, both play and film ended with Joan's last line, "O God, that madest this beautiful earth, when will it be ready to receive Thy saints? How long, O Lord, how long?". Stanley Kauffmann commented it as a disaster.

The film was directed and produced by Otto Preminger, with creenplay by Graham Greene, co-starring Barry Jones, Anton Walbrook, John Gielgud, Felix Aylmer, and many more. Music is by Mischa Spoliansky and cinematography by Georges Périnal. The film was distributed by United Artists and released on May 1957.
