    Ken Russell was a British filmmaker and famous for his pioneering work in film and television. He is famous for his Oscar-winning movie, such as Women in Love in 1969, The Devils in 1971, The Who's Tommy in 1975, and Altered States in 1980.

    His directorial feature debut film was French Dressing in 1964. Despite it's critical and commercial failure, the film led him to work for BBC. In 1969, he produced a film considered to be his "signature film", Women in Love, starring Glenda Jackson, Oliver Reed, Jennie Linden, and Alan Bates. He was nominated for Best Director, and it earned several nominations at Oscar. It also received 3 nominations at the Academy Awards, such as Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography, and Glenda Jackson won Best Actress. During BAFTA Awards, the film earned 11 nominations. His film also won Best English-Language Foreign Film and it earned 2 nominations at the Golden Globes Awards. National Board of Review awarded the film as Top Ten Films and won Best Actress. Glenda Jackson also won Best Actress at National Society of Film Critics and New York Film Critic.

    In 1971, Russell produced 3 film: The Music Lovers screenplay by Melvyn Bragg and starring Richard Chamberlain and Glenda Jackson; The Devils 1971 written by him and starred Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave; and The Boy Friend in which The National Board of Review voted him for Best Director. Twiggy also won Best Newcomer and Best Actress at Golden Globe Awards. The film was also nominated for Best Music, Adaptation, and Original Song Score at Academy Awards.
