Italian film director, producer, and screenwriter Roberto Gastone Zeffiro Rossellini (May 8, 1906 – June 3, 1977) was one of the most prominent directors of the Italian neorealist cinema. In 1937, he made his first documentary, Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune ("Afternoon of a Faun"), and assisted Goffredo Alessandrini in making Luciano Serra, pilota. In 1940, Roberto was called to assist Francesco De Robertis on Uomini sul Fondo and later made his first feature film, The White Ship (1941), together with A Pilot Returns (1942) and The Man with a Cross (1943). Rossellini then directed a series of outstanding war films: Rome, Open City (1945) and Paisan (1946), followed by Germany, Year Zero (1948), his final war film.

He produced and directed L'Amore (1948), with Anna Magnani, and La macchina ammazzacattivi (The Machine to Kill Bad People; 1952). In between, he directed The Stromboli (1950) which resulted in an affair with Bergman and a pregnancy. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru of India invited Rossellini in 1957 to make the documentary India, but because he was rumored to have an affair with Sonali Senroy Das Gupta, a screenwriter married to local filmmaker Hari Sadhan Das Gupta, Nehru asked Rossellini to leave. In 1971, Rossellini help establish a Media Center and begun planning a film on science with Rice professor Donald D. Clayton, which led him to teach at Yale University with his final project documentary film Beaubourg in 1977 and premiered in 1983.

Rossellini had many wives and various children until his death on June, 1977 at the age of seventy one in Rome, Italy.
