    Martin Ritt was an American actor and director who worked in both theater and film. He won and was nominated for many films he directed: The Long, Hot Summer was nominated for Best Director at Directors Guild of America and Palm d'Or Cannes Film Festival in 1958; The Black Orchid was nominated for Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1958; he directed Paris Blues in 1961; Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man was nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globe in 1962; Hud was nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards, Directors Guild of America, Golden Globe, New York Film Critics Circle, and Golden Lion Award at Venice Film Festival, winning the OCIC Award at Venice Film Festival in 1963; The Spy Who Came in the Cold won Best British Film at the BAFTA in 1965; Hombre in 1967; The Great White Hope in 1970; Sounder was nominated for Best Director at the Directors Guild of America in 1972; The Front in 1976; Norma Rae won Technical Grand Prize and was nominated for Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival; Cross Creek was also nominated for Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival in 1983.

    His directorial debut was Edge of the City. It's a significant film for him because it was his chance to give voice to his experiences. Ritt carried on to direct more movies. He directed No Donwpayment in 1957 starring Joanne Woodward and The Sound and the Fury starring Yul Brynner in 1959. Ritt's last film was Stanley and Iris starring Robert De Niro and Jane Fonda in 1990.
