Tony Richardson was an English producer, theatre, and film director. He won Best Director and Best Picture for his film Tom Jones at the Academy Awards. His directorial debut was The Apollo of Belac for television, written by Jean Giraudox and a cast with Denholm Elliot and Natasha Parry.
He was active in Britain's Free Cinema movement and co-directed Momma Don't Allow, a non-fiction short documentary film in 1955 with Karel Reisz. He also produced Look Back in Anger, written by John Osborne. In 1957, he produced The Entertainer lead by Laurence Olivier as Archie Rice.
Richardson co-founded Woodfall Film Productions in 1959 and directed Look Back in Anger as Woodfall's debut, and it was also his first feature film. Several of his films were part of the acclaimed kitchen sink realism movement, such as A Taste of Honey in 1961, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner in 1962, and Joseph Andrews in 1977.
He also directed the drama film Mademoiselle in 1966, winning the BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design in B&W and was nominated for BAFTA Film Award for BAFTA Best British Cinematography in 1968, it was also passed into the 1966 Cannes Film Festival. The Charge of the Light Brigade in 1968 was later nominated 6 times at the BAFTA Film Awards. Some of his subsequent films are Ned Kelly in 1970, Laughter in the Dark in 1969, and A Delicate Balance in 1973, in which Kate Reid was nominated for Best Supporting Actress - Motion Picture at the Golden Globe Awards.
Richardson created 4 major movies before his death. The last film he produced was Blue Sky in 1994, in which Jessica Lange won for Best Actress at Oscar for her performance.
