American film director, commonly referred as Dick Lester or Richard Lester Liebman, was born January 19, 1932. He is famous for his work with the Beatles in the 1960s and the Action in the Afternoon series. He worked as a writer on Curtains for Harry (1955) and for The Barris Beat (1956). When he produced a variety show, it caught the eye of Peter Sellers, who had Lester direct The Goon Show, a radio program, for television as The Idiot Weekly, Price 2d (1956). It was sucessful, which they followed it with A Show Called Fred (1956) and Son of Fred (1956).
He received acclaim for The Running Jumping & Standing Still Film (1959) which was a favourite of John Lennon and The Beatles. He did another short titled The Sound of Jazz (1959), It's Trad, Dad! (1962), The Mouse on the Moon (1963) starring Margaret Rutherford, followed by sequel The Mouse That Roared (1959), and Room at the Bottom (1964).
He worked for A Hard Day's Night (1964) which gave him the title "Father of the Music Video." He then directed The Knack ...and How to Get It (1965) with Michael Crawford and screenwriter Charles Wood, followed with another Beatles film, similar to the James Bond spy films, Help! (1965). He soon received a Hollywood offer to direct A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966) and later How I Won the War (1967), Petulia (1968) with Julie Christie and George C. Scott, The Bed Sitting Room (1969), based on a play by Spike Milligan and John Antrobus, and Superman III (1983),
In 2012, the British Film Institute awarded Lester a highest honour Fellowship in recognition of his work.
