American film director and producer David Lowell Rich (August 31, 1920 – October 21, 2001) directed between 1950 and 1987 nearly 100 films and TV episodes. He was born in New York City and directed episodes of several cult TV shows, including one episode of The Twilight Zone in 1960s.
His Horror At 37,000 Feet (1973) disaster movie craze combined supernatural events and wonderful over-acting from William Shatner, followed by Runaway! (1973), with a solid acting from stars Vera Miles and Martin Milner. His direction for Adventures Of The Queen (1975) was set on The Queen Mary, produced by the Master of Disaster Irwin Allen and featured a strong and powerful performance of the villain Bradford Dillman. His SST: Death Flight (1977) was another airplane disaster film.
Rich won an Emmy for outstanding direction in 1978 for The Defection of Simas Kudirka and three more nominations. The film was based on actual events about a Lithuanian seaman merchant who jumped onto a U.S. Coast Guard cutter and defect from the Soviet Union to the United States, featuring Alan Arkin and directed by David Lowell Rich. The Concorde...Airport '79 (1979) was Rich's first disaster film for theaters, although failed the box office and was mainly viewed badly which ended the Airport movie series.
He is the brother of the prolific television sitcom director John Rich. Rich died on October, 2001 in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA.
