  • Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Jean Renoir vintage movie posters from his critically acclaimed catalog of timeless cinematic creations.

French film director, actor, producer, screenwriter, and author Jean Renoir, whose nickname was “Le patron” (September 15, 1894 – February 12, 1979), worked in more than forty films to the end of the 1960s. Being a son of the famous impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, his films are among the greatest films ever made, namely La Grande Illusion (1937) and The Rules of the Game (1939).

Renoir shoot his first color film The River (1951), which was based on the novel by Rumer Godden and won the International Prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1951. Renoir's last film is Le Petit théâtre de Jean Renoir (1969). In 1973, when preparing a production of his Carola with Leslie Caron and Mel Ferrer, he fell ill and a friend actor producer Norman took over the play and was broadcasted in the series program Hollywood Television.

His published 1974 memoir My Life and My Films received a lifetime Academy Award for his contribution to the motion picture industry in 1975. The government of France elevated him to the rank Légion d'honneur, voted by Entertainment Weekly magazine as the 12th-greatest director of all time. He married Catherine Hessling but separated in 1930. His next partner whom he never married was Marguerite Renoir.

Jean died in Beverly Hills, California on 1979 of a heart attack. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was ranked by the BFI's Sight & Sound poll of critics as the fourth greatest director of all time in 2002.
