Nicholas Ray was an American movie director and famous for his 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause. He is recognized for his narrative films made between 1947 and 1963, including Bigger Than Life, They Live by Night, Johnny Guitar, In a Lonely Place, and We Can't Go Home Again which was not finished due to his death.

Ray was a significant influence to Jean-Luc Godard and the French New Wave, noted in Godard's review of Bitter Victory. His use of color and composition within CinemaScope frame was respected.

Ray traveled rural American during the Great Depression, with Alan Lomax, and produced Back Where I Come From, a pioneering folk music radio program that promoted artists such as Burl Ives, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Lead Belly. During WWII, Ray administered and directed radio propaganda programs for the Office of the War Information.

In 1944, he was Elia Kazan's assistant during the production of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Ray's directorial debut in Broadway was the Duke Ellington musical Beggar's Holiday in 1946. Year after, he produced his first movie, They Live by Night.

Ray made many film noir films, the most remarkable one is In a Lonely Place in 1950, starring Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame. He also directed On Dangerous Ground in 1951, Born to Be Bad in 1950, and A Woman's Secret in 1949. He was most productive and most successfully in 1950's. He made two films that he is most remembered by: Johnny Guitar in 1954 and Rebel Without a Cause, starring James Dean, Sal Mineo, and Natalie Wood, in 1955.
