Jean-Paul Rappeneau is a French film screenwriter and film director. He started out in the industry as an assistant and a screenwriter on Zazie dans le metro in 1960. He also co-wrote L'Homme de Rio in 1964 and was nominated for an Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay.

In 1965, his directorial debut film was A Matter of Resistance, which he also co-wrote. The movie was a great success. Although, the movie was a success, he did not produce another film until 1971, where he directed Les Maries de I'an II and was nominated for Palme d'Or at 1971 Cannes Film Festival.

Rappeneau has written all his movies and directed Le Sauvage in 1975, nominated for Cesar Award for Best Director, which was also a commercial success and earned the 12th highest-grossing film of the year. He also wrote and directed Tout feu, tout flamme in 1981.

He directed Cyrano de Bergerac in 1990. His film was one of the most expensive French film ever produced and most elaborate film version of the play ever made. Rappeneau won the Cesar Award for Best Director and Cesar Award for Best Film at the 1991 Cesar Awards.

Rappeneau's film, where he both co-wrote and directed, The Horseman on the Roof in 1995 was also nominated for Cesar Award for Best Film and Best Director.

In 2003, Rappeneau's comedy film Bon voyage was nominated 11 times at the 2004 Cesar Awards. It was nominated for Best Costumes, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Film, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Writing. The film was awarded for Best Photography, Best Set Design, and Best Young Hopeful Actor, Gregori Derangere.
