Harold Ramis was an American writer, actor, comedian, and director. He is well-known for his acting role in Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989) as Egon Spengler and also in Stripes (1981) as Russell Ziskey, in which he was one of the writers of the said films.
He directed remarkable comedy films such as Caddyshack in 1980, National Lampoons Vacation in 1983, Groundhog Day in 1993, marked as his marterpiece, and Analyze This in 1999.
Ramis wrote the script for National Lampoon's Animal House and was a hit, earning $141 million. He next co-wrote the successful film Meatballs in 1979. His first directorial movie was Caddyshack in 1980, which he was also one of the writer. The movie was a commercial success.
He also acted in supporting roles in some successful films, such as As Good as It Gets in 1997, directed by James L Brooks, and Knocked Up in 2007, directed by Judd Apatow.
Ramis won the Best Original Screenplay for Groundhog Day at the BAFTA Awards. In 2004, Ramis was admitted to the St. Louis Walk of Fame. He received an award at Austin Film Festival's Distinguished Screenwriter Award in 2005. Ramis was also a recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the Chicago Improv Festival in 2010. He was later honored with the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement by the Writers Guild of America in 2015.
The Harold Ramis Film School was founded by The Second City in his honor to focus solely in comedy film in 2016. On the same year, his film Ghostbusters was posthumously dedicated to him.
